Pellaeon, Gilad
the elderly Imperial Navy Captain in command of the Chimaera, Pellaeon took the remnants of the Imperial fleet and retreated from the Battle of Endor. Born on Corellia years before Anakin Skywalker, Pellaeon lied his way into the Judicial Forces when he was just fifteen. While serving aboard various starships with the Old Republic, he learned about the ebb and flow of politcal tides, and saw that the military was something of a constant. He developed a military sense that kept him in the background, making sure his troops were well-fed and respected, rather than bullying them into submission. After the death of Emperor Palpatine at Endor, Pellaeon had no desire to lead the Empire, but he felt it was his duty to keep the Imperial fleet together. Thus, when Grand Admiral Thrawn emerged from the Unknown Regions to take control of the Empire, Pellaeon was more than willing to turn the fleet over to Thrawn, despite Thrawn's obviously alien background. He served Thrawn well, respecting the alien's uncanny insights while providing tactical assistance when necessary. Following the death of Thrawn at the hands of his own bodyguard, Rukh, Pellaeon took Thrawn's remaining ships and fled to the Core Systems, where he came in contact with High Admiral Teradoc. The two marshalled a large fleet of Victory-class Star Destroyers, and rivaled Harrsk for leadership of the Imperial forces for a number of years. When Daala showed up and tried to combine the strengths of the feuding warlords, Pellaeon sided with Daala, who only wanted to restore the Empire. The two of them arranged a summit of all the warlords on Tsoss Station, but were forced to poison them all when they failed to cooperate. Pellaeon became Daala's first officer, and was placed in command of the remaining seventeen Imperial-class Star Destroyers. He was to be the primary attack for that assaulted the Jedi Academy on Yavin 4. His attack was perfect, slipping into the system before the Jedi knew it. However, his Imperial conditioning failed to prepare him for the power of the Force. The Jedi, under the focus of Dorsk 81, used the Force to physically fling the entire Star Destroyer fleet out of the Yavin System, knocking out navigations and hyperdrives. Pelleaon was able to recover all his ships, as well as Admiral Daala's escape pod, before leaving to the system. After Daala's rescue, she resigned her command, and turned control of the Imperial fleet over to him. While he stll had no desire to rule the Empire, Pellaeon felt that the situation was the Battle of Endor all over again. He took the fleet back to the Core Systems to regroup. Pellaeon assumed the position of Supreme Commander of the Imperial Navy, and worked against all odds to rebuild the fleet. He spent several years trying to overcome the problems with the cloaking device, and eventually tested the Computer Combat Predictor. However, its inability to truly aid in a cloaked fight was the last straw in the back of the dwindling Imperial animal. He suggested to Moff Disra that the Imperial remnants should negotiate a surrender with the New Republic some ten years after Thrawn's death, hoping to obtain amnesty rather than execution. Although the majority of the Moffs were in agreement with the plan, Disra's own machinations kept him from wholeheartedly agreeing. Pellaeon began his attempts to contact the Republic by sending Colonel Vermel to meet with Garm Bel Iblis, but Disra captured Vermel before his message was fully delivered. Pellaeon, meanwhile, waited for Bel Iblis as Pesitiin, where Disra sent Zothip and the Cavrilhu Pirates to ambush him. Pellaeon's forces dispatched the pirates, but continued to wait for Bel Iblis. However, Bel Iblis was on a mission to Yaga Minor, so it was Ghent who actually received the truncated message from Vermel. He brought the message to Leia Organa-Solo, who agreed to meet with Pellaeon. Their initial talks were tentative but promising, and both agreed to return to their sides and meet at a later date. Meantime, Pellaeon and Commander Dreyf discovered Disra's plans, and began to press the matter with the Moff. Pellaeon eventually won out over the renegade Moff Disra, and soon signed a peace treaty - later known as the Pellaeon-Gavrisom Treaty - with the New Republic. He assumed command of what became known as the Imperial Remnant, and maintained a distanced relationship with the Republic until the Yuuzhan Vong invaded the galaxy. Then, Pellaeon agreed to help the war effort during the Battle of Ithor, only to be recalled to Imperial space by the short-sightedness of the Moff Council. Pellaeon feared that the Moffs' decision to stay out of the fight - so long as the Yuuzhan Vong avoided the Empire - was the wrong thing to do, but his half-century of experience made him hold his tongue for several years. He worked hard to bolster the forces protecting Bastion, but the Imperials were no match for the surprise attack launched by the Yuuzhan Vong shortly after the Battle of Coruscant. Bastion and Muunilinst were lost almost immediately, and the destruction would have been worse if Luke Skywalker hadn't arrived on the scene. Pellaeon gladly accepted the help of the Jedi, who were searching for the planet Zonama Sekot, and was able to hold off the alien invaders long enough to evacuate the central Imperial systems. However, the Chimaera took heavy damage, and Pellaeon himself was nearly killed. Only the skilled work of the Jedi healer Tekli kept him alive. Once the Imperial Remnant regrouped at Yaga Minor, Pellaeon started his own recovery, and began training his forces with tactics developed by the newly-formed Galactic Alliance. Despite the fact that he was confined to a bacta tank, Pellaeon was also instrumental in helping Jacen Solo convince the Moff Council that it needed to adopt the Galactic Alliance's tactics in order to ensure the very survival of the Empire. When he was able to emerge from the bacta tank, Pellaeon once again took command of the Imperial Navy, and threatened to secede from the Empire if the Moffs didn't accept Jacen's offer to join the Galactic Alliance. Once the Moffs agreed, Pellaeon took the Imperial fleet and began to harass the retreating Yuuzhan Vong forces, hoping to defend the Imperial Remnant by joining the war effort to defeat the alien invaders throughout the galaxy. As the battle neared its conclusion, Pellaeon was appointed the commander of the Galactic Alliance's Fourth Fleet, and was instrumental in the final battle against the Yuuzhan Vong near Coruscant. In the wake of the Yuuzhan Vong surrender, Pellaeon prepared to return to the Imperial Remnant as its primary liaison to the Galactic Republic. Before he left, however, he found time to return the moss painting Killik Twilight to Leia Organa Solo.
Cularin
this planet was the primary world of the Cularin System. Covered with lush rainforests and tropical jungles, Cularin was the homeworld of the Tarasin race. It was also known as the native planet of the rare ch'hala trees. Shortly after the Battle of Naboo, the planet as well as the entire Cularin System, suddenly disappeared from the sector. No one knows exactly what happened, not even the inhabitants of the planet. What was known was that Cularin reappeared several years later, almost as suddenly as it disappeared, shortly after the onset of the Clone Wars. Senator Lavina Wren, despite the fact that Cularin technically did not exist, continued to represent the system in the Galactic Senate. Many linked the disappearance of the Cularin System, often referred to as The Blink, to the rediscovery of the ancient artifact known as the Darkstaff.
Caltrop 5
this chaff gun was produced by Arakyd during the years leading up to the Clone Wars. It fired a spray of sensor-distorting durasteel particles into the air, which created clouds on nearby sensors. When fired at aircraft, the durasteel particles also acted as shrapnel, perforating hulls and flesh with deadly results.
Jukassa, Zett
Like all Padawans in the temple, Zett Jukassa entered the Jedi Order as a very young child, cut off from links to his life before. The parents who gave up the young child to the Jedi longed for a better future for him, far from the dangerous world that would otherwise be his home. Jukassa never knew his parents, ore traders on Mon Gazza. He had no idea that, when he had turned seven years old, his parents were killed in a grisly murder.
Yet somehow, through the Force, he sensed something was amiss. Though his contact with his parents was minimal -- he was separated from them as a newborn -- he nonetheless still carried hazy images and feelings about them. Some were very detailed: descriptions of a world he had barely visited, and strange associates known to his parents. A Jedi Knight, Mierme Unill, was investigating the murder of the Mon Gazzan ore traders when heard reports of a youngling with unnaturally vivid visions of the crime scene.
Knowing that the child might hold valuable clues locked in his subconscious mind, Unill sought permission from the Jedi Council to inform Jukassa of his pre-Jedi past. They approved, and with the help of Jocasta Nu, Jukassa learned of his origins. He was born Warpoc Skamini, the son of Sembric and Ashielle Skamini, proprietors of an ore prospecting launch base on Mon Gazza. The clues held in Jukassa's hazy recollections allowed Unill to complete his investigation: the evidence pointed to Black Sun, and the Jedi arrested the ruthless extortionists responsible for the deaths.
Impressed with Jukassa's resolve and maturity during his search, Unill took the child as his Padawan learner. With the outbreak of the Clone Wars, though, Jukassa was never able to hone his farseeing abilities. Instead, emphasis was placed on his combat training, and he proved himself a capable swordsman at the age of 10.
Sadly, Unill died during the Clone Wars. Zett stayed at the Temple after that, one of many "orphaned" Padawans awaiting reassignment. In the interim, he studied under Cin Drallig.
When Darth Vader attacked the temple, leading a column of clone troopers in a devastating assault on the sacred Jedi edifice, Zett put up a valiant defense. Trapped in the temple, Zett attempted to escape via the Jedi Temple hangar platform.
After slicing through several clones in an acrobatic display of lightsaber prowess, Zett was shot and killed by the elite clone troopers. Bail Organa witnessed the death of the 10-year old Jedi student before rocketing away from the burning temple aboard his airspeeder.

To begin his self-imposed exile on Dagobah, Yoda stowed away aboard an automated Polis Massan-registered super-freighter. Carrying grain to starving inhabitants of the Separatist stronghold of Sluis Van, the ship briefly dropped out of hyperspace just outside Dagobah's solar system. Launching his escape pod undetected and unrecorded, Yoda headed for his gloomy new home. With no hyperdrive aboard, the escape pod was used for a one-way journey.
Exposure to the elements of Dagobah ruined the sensitive electronic systems of the vehicle within a year. Yoda salvaged what he could from the craft, using scavenged elements as part of a crude yet comfortable hut built near a lagoon. The hut's foundation was crafted from the pod's hull plates, while its thruster rings formed the door and window frames, and luminescent elements from the gravity compensators formed the lights to Yoda's hut.

Cerean
this race of near-humans is native to the planet Cerea. In nearly all aspects, Cereans resemble humans. Their heads, however, are much larger than a humans, with a cranial cavity that extends some 12-20 centimeters above their foreheads. This elongated skull is topped with a flowing knot of hair. Contained within the skull is a binary brain, which gives the Cereans an advanced capacity for thinking and meditation. The biological needs of a second brain are supported in the Cerean physiology by a second heart, which was also protected inside the skull. As a race, Cereans tended to be isolationists, preferring to live in a low-tech environment away from the bustle of the Old Republic. However, in the last years of the Old Republic, the younger generation of Cereans decided that they wanted to have things that were commonplace in the rest of the galaxy, life starships and speeder bikes. This led to a generational battle that was decided by the Jedi Ki-Adi-Mundi.
Chiss
this race of blue-skinned humanoids was from the planet Csilla, in the Unknown Regions. Their homeworld was locked in a planet-wide ice age many millennia ago, and they were forced to flee the planet as a species in order to survive. They are all well-muscled and tall, with jet black hair and glowing red eyes. While their history has been marked by nearly continual warfare and conquest of other worlds, the Chiss are generally not violent. They prefer to extend themselves only from a defensive posture, and viewed the idea of a pre-emptive strike against an enemy as if it were murder. This unspoken law dated back nearly a millennium before the Battle of Endor, and was one of the strongest points of Chiss honor and morality. Within Chiss society, children matured very quickly, never truly having an adolescent period before becoming adults. Many of the scientists at the Astrographic Survey Institute believed that the Chiss were among the first races to come in contact with the Yuuzhan Vong, some fifty years before their initial invasion. They theorized that the Chiss understood the Vong's military power, and began augmenting their own war machine to prepare to repel an invasion fleet. Unfortunately, the Chiss remained isolated in the Unknown Regions, and wouldn't allow contact with the New Republic after the Battle of Ithor. Chiss sages spent a great deal of time researching the Yuuzhan Vong, and eventually learned that it had taken the alien invaders many generations to cross the gulf between galaxies.
Dug
this alien race resembles a small horse, although it is completely hairless. The Dug have leathery, grey skin and small, beady eyes. They can easily walk on their hind legs, their forelegs, or all fours. They used their four hands to help them move through the trees of their homeworld of Malastare. Much of their language was punctuated with knuckle rapping and foot stomping. Dugs became the sworn enemies of the Gran when a group of Gran established a settlement on Malastare. They fought viciously for many years before the Old Republic intervened, as the Gran believed that the Dugs were subservient and incapable of ruling themselves. Unfortunately for the Dugs, the Republic ruled in favor of the Gran, and the Dugs were pushed to the fringes of Malastare's economy. Dug society became insular, and they turned into self-congratulatory braggarts. During the last years of the Old Republic, general opinion of the Dug race suffered because of this. They were perceived as criminals with a penchant for violence. Mating among Dug males and females was centered around a display in which the male puffed out their skin, indicating his desire to mate with a given female. If no other male was near, the female accepted the male's offer. When a Dug died, the body was prepared for a funeral by piercing it with heavy hooks. During the funeral itself, heavy iron balls that were inscribed with runes were attached to the balls, and the body was dropped into the Ghoop Ocean.
Fosh
this avian species of bipeds was distinguished by their reverse-jointed legs and their piebald coloration. Their civilization was quite small, and never grew to proportions which would allow it to advance at the same pace as humans and other humanoids. Thus, they spent much of their time concealing themselves from public view. Fosh had unusual, four-fingered hands, with each talon-tipped digit being fully-opposable to all the others.
Kel Dor
this was a formidable race of humanoids from the planet Dorin. They have enlarged, external sensory organs which allow them to interpret basic external stimuli as well as extrasensory input. They evolved breathing the unusual mixture of gases in Dorin's atmosphere, and cannot survive on oxygen-rich planets. Thus, those Kel Dor who traveled to other worlds must wear a sophisticated pair of goggles and an anti-oxygen mask whenever they are off-world. As a people, the Kel Dor were known for their compassion and kind-heartedness, but also for the swift justice they meted out whenever necessary. It was believed that those individuals with silver irises to their eyes were very sensitive to the Force, but there has not been any definitive relationship identified.
Massassi
an alien race brough to Yavin 4 from a planet in the ancient Sith Empire, the Massassi were red-skinned, yellow-eyed humanoids with a primitive culture. The Massassi were later enslaved by Naga Sadow and transported to Yavin 4, where they were transformed by the Sith Lord's dark powers. They became a race of warriors, with grayish-green skin and large, lantern-like eyes. Over the centuries, in the wake of Naga Sadow's death, the altered Massassi became even more primitive in nature, and were comparatively timid and weak when Exar Kun came to Yavin 4 to seek out a Sith power object. Note that Dark Lords of the Sith portrays the Massassi as savage, Dark Side creatures descended from the Sith themseles. They were the offspring of Naga Sadow's alchemical magic. They were also red-skinned humanoids. This seems to have been a change of heart for Kevin Anderson, who worked on both sources. Kun later enslaved them, and made them build the temples that dotted the forest, as focusers of the power of The Force. They were exterminated when Kun, in an effort to defeat the Jedi Knights, consumed their spirits in order to trap his own spirit in the Obsidian Temple during the Great Sith War. Their bodies were destroyed by the Jedi Knights who tried to defeat Kun. Over the intervening millennia, the spirits of the Massassi remained trapped on Yavin 4, until they were released by Anakin Solo and Tahiri Veila, with the help of the Golden Globe. They are termed "Massasi" in Lost City of the Jedi.
Rishii
this species of small, flying creatures was native to the mountainous regions of the planet Rishi. These primitive, feathered creatures have human-like hands located at the joint in their wings, which they used to manipulate their tools. These hands were also used to wield primitive slings while hunting. They prefer to live in nests located in the tallest trees and on mountains, and have a great capacity to learn languages. The Rishii considered the offworlder who settled on their planet to be curiosities, not understanding their need to live in the lowlands. The Rishii were very interested in the "shiny rocks" used by the settlers - their spaceships - because they allowed species without natural wings to fly.
Sandpeople
nomadic desert mutants on Tatooine who roam the Jundland Wastes, they are often called Tusken Raiders because their first attack on a human settlement occured at Fort Tusken. The Sand People have had a deep hatred for humanity ever since the desert bandit Alkhara slaughtered a group of Sand People who had befriended him, some 400 years before the attack on Fort Tusken. Sandpeople are believed to have descended from the Ghorfas, but there was no hard evidence to link the two. Their origins - either native to Tatooine or transplanted - have been lost even to the Sandpeople themselves. They dress in heavy cloth robes, and have covered their heads with strips of cloth to hold a breath mask and eye protection on. Only an individual's mate was allowed to see them with their coverings removed. They have learned how to train the banthas native to Tatooine as mounts, and a marauding group of Tuskens will ride them single file, to hide their numbers. Each raider works with the same bantha for life. When a raider's mount is killed or dies, the raider is left to wander the desert alone. If the bantha's spirit deems it so, the raider will be befriended by another bantha. Otherwise, the raider will die in the sands. On the other hand, if a Tusken is killed or dies, its bantha is turned out into the desert. Although the Sand People are aggressive and violent by nature, they have deep-seated traditions that they cling to tightly. Young raiders are required to prove their adulthood in various physical activities, the hardest of which is the manhood ritual of hunting down a krayt dragon. While the Sand People have no written language, the most revered member of a Tusken clan is the storyteller. He knows the life-story of every member of his clan, and also knows of the clan's history. The storyteller is required to memorize the histories word-for-word, eliminating any chance for misinterpretation or distortion. Apprentice storytellers often are more hard-pressed to prove themselves than warriors, for a single mistake in reciting the histories means instant death. As violent as their nature is, Sand People stay as far from the moisture farmers as the farmers do them. There are occasional attacks on the more outlying settlements. A few scientists have claimed the Tuskens have human origins, but the autopsies done on what little dead they leave behind has revealed cyborg eyes and other non-human characteristics. In battle, Sandpeople have been rumored to spit streams of blood at their victims.
Sith
this ancient race of insect-like humanoids was characterized by its dark, red skin, cranial horns, and long bony chins. There were several subspecies of Sith, each with its own place in their society. Some were slaves, other were warriors, and the highest caste of all were the magicians. They lived in a remote sector of the ancient galaxy, and were unknown to most until a group of Jedi Knights discovered their existence. The early Sith regarded the Dark Jedi as gods. The Force-sensitive Sith magicians proved to have control over the Dark Side of the Force, and the Jedi took many of their tomes and teachings back to study. They hoped to determine ways to avoid the Dark Side, but a group of Jedi found the allure of the Dark Side and the Sith teachings too powerful. They rose up against their Masters, but were not yet powerful enough to defeat them. The Dark Jedi were banished from the Old Republic, and chose to flee across the galaxy to the worlds of the true Sith. Over the millennia, the two groups intermingled, until very little pure Sith blood remained. One of the early Dark Lords of the Sith was Marka Ragnos, who was succeeded by Naga Sadow. Freedon Nadd was a later Dark Lord who was caught by the Jedi Knights on Onderon and entombed there. Nadd's spirit invaded the body and mind of Exar Kun, who eventually became a Dark Lord himself. They developed a rigid hierarchy of magicians and warriors, with the leadership of the brotherhood falling to the current Dark Lord of the Sith. The Sith wrote expansive volumes on the control and use of the Dark Side, and described incredible manifestations of power. Later, they were able to created amulets and weaponry that could assist the user in controlling the Dark Side. These devices amplified the Dark Side, making the user incredibly powerful. Much of the Sith lore was hidden on various worlds when the ancient Jedi Knights first sought to eradicate the Sith. Some was stored on Korriban, some on the moon of Yavin 4. The last remained true-blooded Sith were wiped out by Exar Kun during the Great Sith War, when he stole their life energy in an effort to defend his fortress on Yavin 4 against the forces of the Old Republic.
Ssi-ruu
native to the planet Lwhekk, Ssi-Ruu were warm-blooded, reptilian beasts covered with scales of various colors. Their blunt, oversized heads ended with a beaked mouths, and their bodies ended with muscular tails. They had clawed hands and feet, and strongly-muscled hind legs. They were blind to the Force, and comunicated with each other via a complex series of tweets and whistles. They also have scent tongues which they eject from their nostrils. Each hand has three opposable claws. They all have three eyelids. As a rule, the Ssi-ruu were highly xenophobic, but were more disgusted by other species than afraid of them. There were at least four races of Ssi-ruuk, based on their coloration. They held to a very rigid code of honor, as well as a strict caste system which was based on skin coloration and patterning. Blue Ssi-ruuk were members of the highest caste, and were the politicians and leaders of their society. Gold-skinned Ssi-ruuk were very rare, and were members of the religious caste. Red Ssi-ruuk were generally stronger than their counterparts, and comprised the military caste. The green-scaled Ssi-ruu were workers. Brown-scaled Ssi-ruuk were usually the offspring of mixed or unsuccessful breedings, and were often killed at birth. The Ssi-ruuk were also highly religious, as evidenced by the power of the Conclave in governmental decisions. They feared the possibility of dying away from their homeworld, believing that the soul of an individual who died on another world would be lost forever. Thus, the Ssi-ruuk consecrated every world they wanted to colonize, to ensure there was an afterlife for their souls. Legend held that a Ssi-ruuvi individual would be born with all colors on their scales, a rainbow-scaled individual known as the Keeramak. The birth of the Keeramak would signal the end of the caste system, allowing the weak and oppressed castes to become leaders. However, it was discovered that the Keeramak which was born just prior to the Yuuzhan Vong invasion was not a messiah, but the pawn of a Yuuzhan Vong invasion force that was trying to capture Lwhekk and Bakura, thereby establishing a foothold along the borders of the Unknown Regions. The Ssi-ruuk had been subjugated by the alien invaders, and forced to play their part in the plan.
Trandoshan
these humanoid reptiles were native to the planet Trandosha. They had long arms, which ended in wide, splayed fingers. Their heads were blunt, with beady red eyes and a mouth full of sharp teeth. Their scales ranged in color from orange to ochre to brown, and individuals with green scales were not uncommon. Much of their body could be regenerated if lost, so a Trandoshan could fight much harder without risk of permanent injury. Being a vicious, warlike race, the Trandoshans evolved into hunters, and were especially proficient at hunting Wookiees, which inhabited the nearby planet of Kashyyyk. Trandoshans hunted Wookiees with a vengeance after the Wookiees put severe restrictions on tourist to Kashyyyk and the surrounding system, in an effort to halt the damage to their forests. This cut off large sums of credits from the Trandoshans, who retaliated by killing the Wookiees for sport. This practice was stopped by the Galactic Senate, which ruled that the Wookiees were not game animals and were to be left alone. It was a Trandoshan official who sold the idea of enslaving Wookiees - rather than simply leveling Kashyyyk - to the Empire, a deal which Emperor Palpatine readily agreed to. After the Battle of Endor, Trandoshans were once again forced to stop pillaging Kashyyyk for Wookiee individuals when the New Republic threatened economic sanctions against them.
Darth Millennial
this Sith Lord was one of the few who survived the Light and Darkness War and the Battle of Ruusan. However, he abandoned the Rule of Two and set out on his own, hoping to preserve the Rule of the Strong that was maintained by Lord Kaan. Darth Millennial established his base of operations on the remote world of Dromund Kaas, and his followers eventually became known as the Prophets of the Dark Side.
Darth Nihilus
this was one of three surviving Sith Lords, along with Darth Traya and Darth Sion, who survived the Jedi Civil Wars and fled to Malachor V. Darth Nihilus was noted for his ability to literally consume the Force energy of his victims, which was used to sustain his own life energies. It was rumored that he could consume the Force energy of an entire planet. His early history is unclear, and many historians wondered if was was actually a Sith Lord before he arrived on Malachor V. It was believed that he might simply have been a survivor of the Mandalorian Wars who ended up being stranded on Malachor V. What was know for sure was that he was taken in by Darth Traya and trained in the ways of the Sith, until he had attained enough power to earn the title of Darth Nihilus. From the depths of the Trayus Academy, they planned to finally wipe out the Jedi and take control of the galaxy for the Sith. It was Darth Nihilus and his student, Visas Marr, who discovered the existence of The Exile, and Nihilus recognized the threat that the formet Jedi posed to the Sith. He ordered Visas Marr to bring The Exile to him, but she chose to join The Exile rather than betray him. In the meantime, Darth Nihilus led his Sith forces from his flagship, the Ravager, drawing more and more power from worlds that he blasted into ruin. It was on the mission to destroy Telos that Darth Nihilus was finally confronted by The Exile and his team. Although Darth Nihilus managed to stun The Exile, he was unprepared for the devotion of his former pupil, Visas Marr, to the young man. Visas tried to exchange her life for that of The Exile, giving the former Jedi time to recover from his lapse. Together, they confronted Darth Nihilus. The Sith Lord was no match for their combined might, and he fell in battle to them. As he died, Darth Nihilus' body seemed to melt away into nothing.
Darth Plagueis
this was the Sith Lord who trained Darth Sidious in the ways of the Dark Side of the Force. Chancellor Palpatine related the story of Darth Plagueis to Anakin Skywalker, shortly after the First Battle of Coruscant. According to Palpatine, Darth Plagueis had the ability to influence the actions of the midi-chlorians, and could manipulate them in such a way as to keep those beings closest to him from dying. It was even said that Plagueis had the ability to create life. Ultimately, however, Plagueis became blinded by the pursuit of power, and was killed in his sleep by his apprentice. As Palpatine retold the story, which he referred as a legend called The Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise, it was ironic that Plagueis had the power to save others from death, but not himself. The story of Darth Plagueis was one of the primary reasons it was believed that Anakin chose to ally himself with Palpatine, since the young Jedi Knight was having visions of the death of his wife, Padme' Amidala. It was later theorized that it had been Plagueis who caused Anakin to be brought to life, since Shmi Skywalker was known to have never married or had conjugal relations with a man before Anakin's birth. This was never proven, however.
Darth Traya
this was the name adopted by former Jedi Master Kreia, when she turned to the Dark Side of the Force and joined the Sith, in the wake of the Mandalorian Wars. She didn't reveal her true self until after the Jedi Civil War, when she chose to adopt her former name in order to locate The Exile. After Kreia was exiled from the Jedi Order, she traveled to Malachor V to locate Revan. Once there, she trained at the Trayus Academy, and eventually became Darth Traya. She chose two of her students, Darth Sion and Darth Nihilus, to form the base of power for the Sith on Malachor V, although they did not hold to her belief that a true Sith needed to understand the Light Side of the Force to be truly powerful. Historians believed that she was either exiled by her former students or betrayed by them, forcing her to set out on her own. She was able to sense the presence of her former student, The Exile, and discerned that he might be one of the last of the Jedi. She set out to locate him, and was forced to fight past Darth Sion in order to retrieve him at Peragus II. During the subsequent battles she fought with The Exile, Darth Traya maintained her appearance as Jedi Master Kreia, although she often let small suggestions of her true self come out in her actions. After The Exile traveled to Onderon and defeated General Vaklu and Tobin, Kreia realized that her "pupil" was now growing in strength, and would become a threat to her triumverate of power. She tried to kill him on Dantooine, where the surviving Jedi Masters had gathered, but was forced to flee before she could make sure that he was dead. Darth Traya returned to Malachor V and began to prepare to defeat her student. After the deaths of Darth Nihilus and Darth Sion, Darth Traya was the only surviving member of her order, and she was prepared to fight The Exile to the death. In the battle, she nearly fell to the younger man, but managed to use the Dark Side of the Force to fling three lightsabers at him. Forced to deal with this threat, The Exile lost sight of Darth Traya briefly, but defeated her lightsabers and returned to confront her. Defenseless without her lightsabers, she was unable to stop his advance. Before he killed her, The Exile demanded that she tell him something of the future, in an effort to decide what he should do next.
Darth Zannah
this young girl was once known simply as Zannah. In the wake of the Battle of Ruusan, Zannah abandoned her brother on Ruusan and became the apprentice of Darth Bane. Years later, she returned to Ruusan to confront her brother, who had also grown strong with the Dark Side of the Force. Both of them were killed in the fiery confrontation.
Darth Vaderov oklop/odijelo
Darth Vader's grim black attire was a life-support system, his labored mechanical breathing the sound of a walking iron lung. Critically injured in a lightsaber battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar, Vader became "more machine than man," kept alive only by the devices built into his suit. Kenobi's lightsaber sheared off his lower legs and his left arm, while exposure to the fire and radiation of Mustafar's searing surface burned his flesh and ravaged his body throughout.A team of droids rebuilt Vader in an Imperial rehabilitation center on Coruscant, adding cybernetic components to his body and encasing him in black armor. The fearsome visage of his breath mask reflects the dark identity that he assumed after his fall from the light side of the force.
Vader could only remove his mask in a special hyperbaric chamber, such as the one on board his Star Destroyer Executor. Allowing no one to assist him, Vader relied on mechanical devices to remove and replace his helmet and metal breath screen.
Darth Vader's suit follows ancient Sith tradition, when the warriors of the dark side would adorn themselves in heavy armor. Vader's armor is built around a plastoid girdle that protects his organic and synthetic internal organs. More visible durasteel plates cover his shoulders, upper body and shins. He wears a suit of quilted flexible blast-dampening multi-ply padding, and a cloak of armor weave. His gloves are made with a unique micronized iron that can deflect anything short of a lightsaber blow.
Vader's life support system included a chest-worn, computerized control panel unit that regulated his respiratory functions. Three slot like dataports offered diagnostic checks of his pulmonary, respiratory and neural systems. On his belt, Vader wore two small system function boxes. The one on his right featured a temperature regulation system. On his left, he wore a respiratory sensor matrix. The center buckle featured an audio enhancement unit built into the electromagnetic clasp. Durasteel armor protected his shoulders, upper ribcage and shins.
Battle of Drongar
this was the name used to describe the fight for control of the planet Drongar, an engagement between the Grand Army of the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the height of the Clone Wars. Ostensibly, Drongar was of little military importance. However, both sides realized that whoever controlled the export of processed bota would have the upper hand in the war. Because the bota plants were extremely delicate in nature, traditional warfare tactics were abandoned, in order to preserve the plant. Local sorties fought with slugthrowers, swords, and staffs were necessary to prevent damaging the bota, forcing both sides to constantly adapt. The battle came to an abrupt end when the Separatists learned that the bota plants were mutating at such a rate that they would become useless weeds in a matter of weeks. They launched a massive assault on the forces of the Old Republic, driving them off Drongar and leaving the planet behind.
Declann, Nial
this dark-skinned man was one of the original twelve Grand Admirals of the Empire. A man known for his threatening demeanor and morose personality, Declann was also a student of the Force. He could use a telepathic connection to his troops to merge them into a unified force. He developed his military expertise as a soldier in the Army of the Republic, surviving the Clone Wars before joining the Empire as a TIE Fighter pilot. His skills with the Force left him with a nagging question: why hadn't he ever been chosen for training by the Jedi Knights? Emperor Palpatine, recognizing his military skills and strength in the Force, began training Declann in the ways of the Sith. With these skills, Declann became one of the primary sources of coordination during the Battle of Endor, using his telepathic skills aboard the second Death Star to keep the Imperial forces aware of any possible Alliance threat. However, when Darth Vader turned on the Emperor and threw him down a power shaft, Declann felt the Emperor's death through the Force. Declann dropped his connection to the Imperial forces and tried to reach the Emperor, but the Death Star exploded before he could reach the throne room. Declann was killed in the explosion.
Diath, Nico
this man was one of the long line of Jedi Knights to come from the Diath family, which traced its roots back some 4,000 years to the planet Tatooine. Something of a rogue within the Jedi Order, Master Diath was known for his hatred of slavery. After attaining the rank of Jedi Master, he refused to take a padawan learner, choosing instead to roam the galaxy wherever the Force guided him. During the decades leading up to the Clone Wars, he spent much of his time in the Outer Rim, working along to free more than a thousand slaves. It was rumored that the Hutts had even tried to put a bounty on his head. Unfortunately for the Jedi Order, Master Diath died during the early stages of the Clone Wars. He had been part of the team dispatched to recover the antidote to the swamp gas used to destroy life on Ohma-D'un, and was killed when the catwalk he as standing on was damaged by the bounty hunter Durge. Master Diath fell to his death in the lava below.
Diath, Tae
this young Jedi padawan was the nephew of Nico Diath, and a part of the almost legendary Diath family of Jedi Knights. Tae was part of the task force which was dispatched to the planet Jabiim, during the height of the Clone Wars, to liberate the planet from Separatist control. Many of the students, Tae among them, were forced to watch their Masters die in battle. As the padawans tried to regroup, Tae began to question Anakin Skywalker's ability to remain focused on the battle. However, the group remained strong, until Anakin was ordered by Supreme Chancellor Palpatine to leave the group to help coordinate the rescue efforts. As Anakin left, Tae and the others regrouped in an effort to slow the progress of Alto Stratus toward the Republic's last base. The fight between Stratus' forces and the padawans lasted for nearly a day before Tae was caught alone on the battlefield and brutally slaughtered by a group of assassin droids. His death caused a massive, psychic backlash through the Force which destroyed the mind of Elora.
Dir'Nul, Vydel
this woman was a Jedi Knight who was dispatched to locate the serial killer known only as Kardem during the height of the Clone Wars. Dir'Nul had refused the promotion to General in the Army of the Republic when the Clone Wars broke out, stating that she wasn't interested in becoming a "walking weapon at the beck and call of self-serving politicians." Besides, she explained, she was getting closer to catching Kardem. She had taken the assignment after Kardem had killed her first love, a pilot named Ash B'risko. Kardem then killed three Twi'lek females, and all four victims bore the marks of having been killed by a lightsaber and destroyed by Force lightning. Dir'Nul was unable to stop the death of a fourth Twi'lek on Perilious, but it was on the Outer Rim world that the truth of Kardem's identity was exposed. Kardem was actually Vydel Dir'Nul, who had slipped over to the Dark Side of the Force when she discovered that Ash B'risko had taken a Twi'lek female as a lover. In her jealousy, Dir'Nul killed B'risko, then set out to avenge her loss by killing Twi'lek females. Another Jedi was dispatched to bring her in, but she killed him as well, adding a Jedi to Kardem's growing list of victims. As she snapped out of her strange possession, Dir'Nul discovered the body of the Jedi and vowed to continue her search for Kardem.
Dodonna, Vrad
the son of Jan Dodonna, Vrad fled from an encounter with the Executor just before the Battle of Hoth. He escaped from the battle in a shuttle and hid behind a nearby moon until the battle was completed. Vrad had a great fear of dying in battle, which he tried to conceal from his father. He faked battle damaged to his shuttle with a blaster and returned to Yavin 4. Han Solo and Luke Skywalker were able to see through the deception, but couldn't decide how to approach General Dodonna about it. In an effort to make up for his perceived cowardice, Vrad volunteered to take the last power gem into battle against the Executor. Dodonna named Luke as his backup, which worried Luke. Luke confronted Vrad about his suspicions, but Vrad knocked him unconscious. They had to put their differences aside as the mission began, but Vrad panicked when he encountered the ship again. He was able to penetrate the Star Destroyer's defenses and momentarily drop some of its shields, but the power gem's effects were short-lived, and the Executor survived. Vrad then landed on a small moon and dropped off Luke, them returned to ram the Star Destroyer with his own ship, sacrificing himself in hopes of doing more damage to the Executor. Following Vrad's death, Luke was promoted to Commander. Note that the Star Wars Radio Drama indicates Luke wasn't promoted to Commander until Narra's death.
Droid Disabler
this ionization gun was developed by Felebreck Electrical Defense Systems to stop a droid. Initially used to halt runaway or out-of-control droids, many criminals used these devices to neutralize security droids.
For'deschel, Devan
this woman served as the mistress of ligthsabers at the Almas Academy, during the height of the Clone Wars. Master For'deschel originally trained under the tutelage of Mace Windu, and she was the first Jedi from outside the Cularin System to return to Almas after the disappearance of Cularin and its sudden reappearance. As the Clone Wars began to spread across the galaxy, Devan was one of the few Jedi to remain on Almas to continue the training of the students there. She was an expert in the Form V style of lightsaber combat, a style which had not been previously taught at Almas by Master Kirlocca. She also spent much of her free time investigating the disappearance of Cularin and the many aspects of the Sith artifact known as the darkstaff.
Glynn-Beti
this blond-furred, female Bothan was a Jedi Master during the last decades of the Old Republic. At the onset of the Clone Wars, Glynn-Beti was given the rank of General in the Republic's armed forces, and led the mission which attempted to capture Count Dooku on Raxus Prime, just after the Battle of Geonosis. The mission to capture Dooku was unsuccessful, but the clone troopers managed to disrupt his plans to recover the Force Harvester. Like most Jedi of her time, Glynn-Beti condemned the actions of Aurra Sing.
Kuat Drive Yards
KDY was one of the top three starship manufacturers in the galaxy, along with the Corellian Engineering Corporation and Sienar Fleet Systems. KDY was controlled by the ruling families of the planet Kuat, with each new ruler being chosen from among the most competent in a vote. However, it was determined that the Kuat family had the most aptitude for running the huge corporation, and the ruling families established the Inheritance Exemption. This allowed control of KDY to pass from one generation of the Kuat family to the next, thereby ensuring that the most able of the Kuat minds was continually in control of the corporation. This meant that KDY was always generating vast amounts of wealth for all the ruling families. Kuat Drive Yards remained independent from any governmental body, from the time of its inception during the Old Republic throughout the New Order of Emperor Palpatine. It was perhaps most famous for its production of the Imperial-class Star Destroyer. It also produced many shipboard components, as well as the Nebulon-B frigate. KDY began experimenting with the development of massive starships shortly before the onset of the Clone Wars, then aligned itself with the Empire, and remained pro-Imperial after the Battle of Endor. During the last decades of the Old Republic, KDY was part of the Trade Federation. However, during the Eriadu Conference, the Neimoidians staged their bloody takeover of the Federation, killing several top Kuati officials. It was then than KDY severed all ties with the Federation and provided its knowledge and facilities to the Old Republic. KDY was also one of the original Signatory Sponsors of the Corporate Sector Authority. Unknown to most buyers, every ship which left Kuat Drive Yards was given a regulator subcode in its computer system. This trapdoor allowed Kuat Drive Yards engineers to obtain control of a ship for diagnostics and repairs. These codes could also be used to break into a ship and take control from its user. This fact was never revealed, in part to save KDY from the wrath of Emperor Palpatine. During the last days of the New Order, shortly before the Battle of Endor, much of Kuat Drive Yards was destroyed by Kuat of Kuat. He hoped to ensure that no one - not the Empire, the Alliance, or Kodir of Kuhlvult - would take control of the operation. He acted nobly, but was unaware of the forces around him. In fact, the bounty hunter Boba Fett was his greatest ally, and helped expose Kodir's treacherous plans. The future leaders of KDY maintained Kuat of Kuat's series of explosives, which could be detonated if the facilities ever were in danger of being captured.
Rothana
located in the Kuat Sector of the galaxy, Rothana was one of the most industrialized planets in the sector. The primary world in the Rothana System, it served as the base of operations for Rothan Heavy Engineering, a subsidiary of Kuat Drive Yards, during the last century of the Old Republic. Its proximity to the Kamino System meant that Rothana was chosen by the Kaminoans as the construction site for many of the war machines employed by the clone troopers of the Army of the Republic.
Rothana Heavy Engineering
a division of Kuat Drive Yards, this was one of the largest manfacturing corporations found in the Old Republic, during the years leading up to the Clone Wars. Rothana produced the Acclamator-class military transport and several other ground-based vehicles in support of the Army of the Republic.
HEAP Missile
this was the designation of any weapon used to breach the armor of an enemy vehicle. Developed by the Old Republic during the Clone Waars, HEAP weapons were High-Exsive, Armor-Piercing missiles used to defeat the massive, ground-based droid artillery of the Separatist forces.
Aiwha
this was a species of flying cetacean native to the planet Naboo, and also found on the world of Kamino. The aiwha was similar in appearance to a thranta. They used a combination of sonar and radar for their communication, and were equally at home swimming in the ocean or flying through the air. A hollow bone structure and large lungs helped the aiwha remain aloft or afloat, and their flat tail was used as a rudder and paddle. Their small legs were not made for walking, and the aiwha preferred to land in the water rather than on land. Many aiwhas were trained by the Gungan and Kaminoan peoples to accept a saddle and harness, and were used as airborne transports. Aiwhas fed on the small fish which inhabited the surface of the ocean, eating primarily daggerts. While it was generally acknowledged that the Naboo aiwhas were indigenous, many xenobiologists believed that the Kaminoan aiwhas were either transplanted or genetically reproduced.
Geonosian Massiff
this was an immense predator, native to the planet Geonosis and also found on Tatooine. Massiffs were considered a symbol of authority by the Geonosian aristocracy, who kept domesticated massiffs as pets. These massiffs also patrolled the colony's dwellings, eradicating vermin in exchange for the protection of living inside the caves. The average massiff grew a pair of spike-like antlers each year, until a ring of these spikes protected their skulls.
Nexu
native to Cholganna, this incredibly dangerous, feline predator was prized by those beings who staged gladiator fights during the last years of the Old Republic. The head of a nexu was wide and flat, and dominated by its toothy maw. A golden mane surrounded the head, and the paws of the nexu were studded with heavy claws. Most nexu were native to the continent of Indona, with four distinct subspecies existing on Cholganna. Perhaps the most formidable of these subspecies was the four-eyed forest nexu. Two pairs of eyes gave the forest nexu incredible vision, with the primary pair having the ability to see in the visible spectrum while the secondary pair could see in the infrared spectrum. The tail of the forest nexu was partially prehensile, and split into two long "fingers" which were used to stabilize the forest nexu when it hunted in the trees for arboreal octopi. It was rumored that the Old Republic Senator from Malastare, Ask Aak, once kept a nexu as an export pet and guard-beast.
Nuna
this strange, bird-like reptile inhabited the swamps of the planet Naboo. The nuna had a large, round body supported by two strong legs. Its wings or arms were virtually non-existent, and its head bobbed up and down when it walks. Also known as a swamp turkey, the nuna was often served as the main course at Gungan holiday feasts. When confronted in the wild, most nuna would simply turn and flee as fast as they could. If cornered, though, a nuna would lash out with its sharp beak and kick with its legs. Males often showed aggression by inflating the wattles around their necks and hissing. Females gave birth to a litter which was contained in a single, huge egg. Each egg could contain up to ten young, and the mother had to help the young escape from the thick shell upon hatching. The meat of a nuna was considered tasty to the Gungans, but was poisonous to Rodians and Twi'leks. The Gungans developed a sport, known as nuna-ball, that used a live nuna as the ball. The angered nuna puffed itself up, and was carried by each team toward it's opponent's goal.
Reek
originally native to the the wilds of Ylesia and maintained in great ranches on the Codian Moon, this immense, reptilian herbivore was distinguished by the three heavy horns which surrounded its mouth. The horn atop its nose was used for attack, while the two horns at each side of the mouth were for defense. The long, front legs of the reek allowed it to raise its head quite high, while its short hind legs provided a stable base. The coloration of the reek was mainly gray, although the specimens found on Geonosis had red coloring along its back, neck, and head. This coloration was due to the high percentage of meat in its diet. Reeks were prized by those beings who staged gladiator fights during the last years of the Old Republic, because their hide was incredibly thick and hard to damage. Many fighters discovered that a reek could be best attacked while riding on its back, where the creature's skin was so thick that it couldn't sense the rider's presence.
Shaak
this unusual creature roamed the plains of Naboo in great herds. They were quadripedal mammals, although their bodies were quite immense when compared to their short, spindly legs. They were physically weak, barely able to keep themselves upright. This made them poor choices for pack animals by either the Naboo or the Gungans. They had flexible snouts that were used to nibble grass and other plants, and the flesh of the shaak was considered to be a delicacy by both the Naboo and the Gungans because it took little preparation to bring out its taste. The fatty ambergris was also used, as a base for perfumes. Their huge body and short legs keep them out of the swamps, where they are helpless to escape. Luckily, their fat bodies allowed them to float, and even a fall over a waterfall caused little real damage. Females of the species were continually pregnant, and their compartmentalized uterine system allowed them to be impregnated by different males at the same time.
Orray
this large beast was used as a mount by Geonosian warriors. The average orray resembled a crocodilian reptile which moved about on four tall legs. The orray was once a predator of the Geonosians themselves, rooting out the newly-filled hives and eating the eggs of thousands of larvae. Over the generations, the orrays have been domesticated by the Geonosians. The tail of wild orrays was tipped with a long stinger, which was bobbed in domestic orrays. The Geonosians capped the tail with a metal fitting, to prevent it from regrowing the stinger.
Roga
this squat, six-legged creature was native to the planet Geonosis. The insectile roga moved about on its spindly, hose-like legs, and was attracted to sources of heat. Its mouth was surrounded by grasping mandibles, and a pair of feathery antennae sprouted from its head.
Clandes
this industrial city was located on the planet Ord Cestus, some 300 kilometers south of ChikatLik and seventy-five kilometers southeast of the Dashta Mountains. The city itself was built into the crust of the planet by the X'Ting, who burrowed well below the surface to reach an aquifer that could supply them with fresh water. During the decades leading up to the Clone Wars, Clandes was converted to serve as the location of a major communications junction between the largest cities of the planet. The power and connections required to service cities such as ChikatLik - not to mention the secret bunker maintained by the Five Families - meant that Clandes was exposed to intense levels of radiation. This rendered the city uninhabitable, a situation that provided the Five Families with a surprising bonus. Because the city was uninhabited, they did not have to employ the normal safety systems required in a high-radiation area. In this way, the Families maintained their communications and power grids without spending credits on additional shielding. Much of the original cityscape was leveled to make room for the manufacturing facilities of Clandes Industrial.
Clandes Industrial
this was the name given to the immense, city-wide collection of manufacturing facilities that covered the city of Clandes, on the planet Ord Cestus, during the height of the Clone Wars. In addition to the various surface buildings, Clandes Industrial burrowed some twenty-four levels below the surface, with employee facilities buried well beneath the lethal radiation that bombarded the upper levels. These underground levels were carved from an abandoned X'Ting hive, from which the native X'Ting were evacuated or evicted. During the Clone Wars, Clandes Industrial was the primary manufacturing site of the JK-series of security droids. After the Desert Wind terrorist gang was routed from their base by a group of infiltration droids dispatched by Asajj Ventress, they set out to destroy the Clandes Industrial facility, thereby bringing the manufacturing facilities of the Five Families to a crippling halt with a minimum of bloodshed. In the wake of the attack on Clandes Industrial, the major cities found themselves suddenly without power and water, and many inhabitants were forced to horde whatever they could to survive. This placed a great deal of stress on the Five Families, since they had to maintain public safety without jeopardizing their own positions.
Crawl-carrier
this espionage and infiltration droid was developed by the Confederacy of Independent Systems, from a base on the planet Dagro, during the first year of the Clone Wars. The mission profile of the crawl-carrier was to reach an otherwise secure location - one that couldn't be reached by organic beings or by larger droids - and either destroy it or render it useless. These squat, rectangular droids moved about on eight segmented legs, and could be modified for a variety of uses. One version of the crawl-carrier was known as an acid droid, and carried a payload of highly-caustic, green acid. Others could be adapted to carry anti-personnel explosives, electrical disruptors, or even other droids like shockers. In this way, the crawl-carrier was the perfect terrorism weapon, allowing Separatist forces to disrupt the normal, day-to-day services of enemy emplacements. The primary development facility for crawl-carriers was hidden on the planet Dagro, until it was destroyed by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, about a year after the Battle of Geonosis.
Depthsuit
this was a form of aquatic armor developed for use by the Grand Army of the Republic, during the height of the Clone Wars. Each black depthsuit was made from a flexible material that provided a clone trooper with protection against the intense pressures and temperature changes encountered underwater, allowing them to gain access to a remote location by moving through deep water to avoid detection.
Faraway-class Scout Ship
this sensor-loaded reconnaisssance craft was developed by the Old Republic during the height of the Clone Wars. Its primary mission was to infiltrate areas of known or possible Separatist control, then obtain all manner of information before returning to its home base. Each of these ships was equipped with an R3-series astromech unit, to assist in piloting.
Flalios
this immense man was one of the many gladiators who fought in the arenas of Rattatak during the years leading up the Clone Wars. He often fought with a pair of rope-like weapons, each with heavy balls at the end, using them as flails to pound his opponents into submission.
Formcot
this specialized piece of furniture was portable enough to provide a bed for the clone troopers of the Grand Army of the Republic, during the Clone Wars. Despite the ease of transportation, formcots were designed with special materials that conformed to the shape of the being who was sleeping on them, providing an exceptionally comfortable bed despite its humble appearance.
Hover-flare
this was a specialized form of incendiary device created during the years leading up to the Clone Wars. When launched, a hover-flare flew to a pre-determined altitude before igniting. It then hovered in place for a short period of time, providing a light source by which attacking forces could spot their enemies and attack them with more conventional weapons. The Confedereacy of Independent Systems made widespread use of hover-flares, which provided additional light for droid-based armies to see by.
Josall, Sephjet
this man, with his bald pate, was one of the many Jedi Knights who were dispatched to Geonosis to rescue Obi-Wan Kenobi, at the start of the Clone Wars. Josall and his partner, Nicanas Tassu, provided back-up lightsabers to Obi-Wan and his padawan, Anakin Skywalker, during the height of the battle. Sephjet Josall was portrayed by Jospeh Jett Sally in Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
Moving Meditation
this was a form of active meditation that was practiced by many of the Jedi Knights of the Old Republic. Rather than remaining in a single position and entering a meditative trance, those Jedi who preferred moving meditation engaged in a relaxing activity. This allowed their minds to remain active without requiring a great deal of concentration and thought. Anakin Skywalker often used this relaxing technique during the Clone Wars, turning his attention to the repair of machinery to take his mind off the struggles and ravages of the war.
Security and Enforcement Act
this was one of many pieces of legislation that were promoted during the height of the Clone Wars, and ultimately supported by Chancellor Palpatine. The Security and Enforcement Act wwas created to provide the Chancellor with the ability to restructure military forces to ensure the protection of those individuals deemed vital to the survival of the Republic, including the Chancellor himself. The Senate initially voted to table any discussion on the Act during the Battle of Jabiim, but a pirate attack on Bail Organa's transport ship prompted Chancellor Palpatine to restart negotiation on the Act. Organa vowed to fight against it, but found himself powerless to do so. The Act was eventually passed in the wake of the destruction of the Star of Iskin and the death of Finis Valorum, providing Palpatine with even more control. However, once it was enacted, the Security and Enforcement Act only served to embolden the pirates who had grown more prevalent. Because the Act allowed for the utter destruction of pirates and other criminals, it also gave these criminals the right and opportunity to fight back. Many Jedi Knights died in skirmishes with pirates who believed that they had every right to defend themselves.
Separatist Union
this was one of the most active subgroups of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, during the height of the Clone Wars. The Separatist Union was a mobile operation, allowing it to avoid detection while it gathered information from the battlefronts of the Clone Wars. Much of this information was disseminated via the CIS Shadowfeed, and occasionally was sliced into the Old Republic's HoloNet.
Silent, The
this mysterious group of veiled individuals began showing up in hospitals and medical facilities throughout the galaxy during the height of the Clone Wars. Their mission - which was communicated in writing and never spoken, thus the name of the group - was to assist doctors and surgeons in healing their patients simply by means of their presence. Members of The Silent always wore an identity-concealing osmotic veil when in the presence of the sick or injured, ostensibly to prevent transference of contagions. They never spoke, not even to each other, and took their meals in a private location. It was unknown how The Silent drew their strange power, but the evidence in their favor was startling. Those operating rooms and hospitals in which a member of The Silent was working experienced higher recovery rates than non-staffed facilities. Many believed that The Silent drew upon the Force, although the Jedi Order claimed no relation to The Silent.
Tassu, Nicanas
this long-haired man was one of the many Jedi Knights who were dispatched to Geonosis to rescue Obi-Wan Kenobi, at the start of the Clone Wars. Tassu and his partner, Sephjet Josall, provided back-up lightsabers to Obi-Wan and his padawan, Anakin Skywalker, during the height of the battle. Nicanas Tassu was portrayed by Nic Anastassiou in Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
Thermoenergetic Screen
this form of heat protection was developed by the Old Republic during the height of the Clone Wars. Using a thermoenergetic screen, a clone trooper could be encapsulated in a small pod, which could be ejected from a transport ship so that the trooper could reach a drop point on a planet's surface. This eliminated the need for large, expensive dropships that provided enemies with a large target. The small, expendable pods were hard to detect, allowing a trooper to reach the surface swiftly and undetected. The thermoenergetic screen deflected the incredible heat that was built up upon entry into a planet's atmosphere, keeping the trooper inside safe.
Xythan Force Shield
this unusual, personal comabt shield was developed by Cestus Cybernetics during the height of the Clone Wars, and turned over to Asajj Ventress and the Separatists for their use. The Xythan shield absorbed and returned any energy it came into contact with, making it especially useful in repelling lightsaber attacks.
Trade Federation
this group was formed during Old Republic, some 350 years before the Battle of Yavin, to monitor and maintain the delicate balances of power between the growing economies of the Core Worlds and the developing worlds of the remote Outer Rim Territories. Ostensibly, they were the policemen of commerce for the Old Republic, working to ensure fairness and mediate disputes between merchants and transport providers. The Federation became large enough, and powerful enough, to maintain a seat in the Galactic Senate as if they were a populated planet. Many outlying systems aligned themselves with the Federation, rather than requesting direct representation in the Senate, because it was a more expedient way to develop trade with the Core Worlds. However, the Trade Federation - controlled by the Neimoidian race - was inherently weak, and soon found itself under the control of Darth Sidious during the years leading up to the Clone Wars. A series of political maneuvers led to the Old Republic's taxation of trade routes in the galaxy, which took away much of the control and profit realized by the Neimoidians. In an attempt to force the repeal of the tax law, and under the control of Sidious, the Trade Federation threatened the world of Naboo by blockading all trade to and from the planet. The blockade was eventually broken during the Battle of Naboo, but the Federation had already outlived its usefulness to Sidious, who abandoned them when they could no longer control the situation. In the aftermath of the Naboo blockade, the Trade Federation's warfleet and its military personnel were absorbed into the Old Republic's own defense forces, and the Federation itself was restricted in its ability to do business. The Republic ordered the immediate downsizing of the Federation's droid forces, but many of these combat automatons were simply resold to Federation holdings. Nute Gunray, the Viceroy of the Trade Federation, survived imprisonment and maintained control of the Federation. However, he felt betrayed by Darth Sidious and so threw his support to Count Dooku and the Separatists. In the wake of the Clone Wars and the establishment of the New Order, the Trade Federation was absorbed into the Empire and Imperialized.
Dark Side Elite
this was the name given to the seven warriors trained by Emperor Palpatine in the ways of the Dark Side of Force. Known by the title of Executor, each of the seven Elite was believed to have been utterly loyal to Palpatine. Their leader was Sedriss, and among their ranks were Vill Goir, Zasm Katth, Baddon Fass, Krdys Morid, Kvag Gthull, Tedryn-Sha, and Xecr Nist. Only one member of the Dark Side Elite was known to have deserted his service to the Emperor and returned to the Light Side of the Force. This individual was Kam Solusar. With the death of Emperor Palpatine on Onderon, and the destruction of his stronghold on Byss, the members of the Dark Side Elite were also eliminated.
Darth Bandon
this former Jedi Knight abandoned his old Master and the teachings of the Jedi, then fled to the Sith-controlled world of Korriban during the height of the Great Sith War. On Korriban, Bandon caught the attention of Darth Malak, who later selected Bandon as his lone apprentice in the wake of Darth Revan's death. For the remainder of the war against the Old Republic, Darth Bandon slaughtered his opponent with ruthlessness and cruelty.
Spelunker Droid
this mining and escavation probe droid was produced by Arakyd during the years leading up to the Clone Wars. These cylindrical droids moved about on four segmented legs, and were equipped with a wide range of mineral and ore sensing technologies. When a site appeared to be worth mining, the Spelunker drilled a core sample, then placed an explosive charge in the hole for preliminary blasting, opeing the hole for larger mining equipment. Many of the Spelunker droids found in use before the Clone Wars were used by the Commerce Guild to mine inhospitable worlds. Later, the Spelunker served as the basis for the so-called chameleon droid used by the Confederacy of Independent Systems.
Gthull, Kvag
one of the reborn Emperor Palpatine's Dark Jedi, Gthull was in charge of interrogations at Bast Castle. He was sent by Palpatine, along with Tedryn-Sha and Xecr Nist, to capture Jacen and Jaina Solo. He nearly succeeded, but Rayf Ysanna used the Force to recover the children, while Princess Leia blasted Gthull into oblivion.
Jalahafi, Shela
this dark-haired woman was a Dark Jedi adept, and was part of a team entrusted by the Emperor to infiltrate spies and agents into the ranks of the Alliance. She and her brother, Teles, worked to subvert the rebel underground which rose up on Edan II, but Shela was lost in the struggle. It was unknown if she survived.
Jalahafi, Teles
the brother of Shela Jalahafi, this man served the Empire as a Dark Side adept, like his sister. However, Teles lacked his sister's strength in the Dark Side of the Force. After Shela was lost in an attack on rebels in Fortuna City, Teles tracked them to the wreckage of the Last Hope
Mordi, Krdys
one of Sedriss' sergeant-at-arms aboard the Avenger during the early stages of Operation Shadow Hand. He was also one of Emperor Palpatine's Dark Jedi, and was sent to New Alderaan to kill Luke Skywalker. In the attack, Mordi was slain by Jem Ysanna's lightsaber.
Morthul
this Dark Jedi was known for his cruelty to non-human races. He was eventually defeated by a group of young Jedi shortly after the Battle of Endor.
Totha, Von
this young woman was trained as a Dark Jedi, and sent after Nason Laric, in order to ensure that the Jedi Master Niquon was dispatched. However, thanks to the efforts of Lowghen Badra, Laric escaped and rescued Niquon
Ginivex-class Starfighter
this was a form of starfighter produced by the Geonosians during the height of the Clone Wars. These ships were commonly referred to as fanblade fighters by the military forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, since the main wing of the fighter could be extended like a fan. When in stealth mode, the fan is drawn into the fuselage, giving the craft a slim, elegant profile. The spherical cockpit was mounted in a cradle at the front of the craft, and a pair of support struts extended behind to support the fan. The fan itself was extended on the dorsal and ventral sides of the fighter during combat, giving the fighter a half-circle of wing that provided maneuverability. At the tip of each fan was a double laser cannon. The material of the fan was similar to the sail used on Count Dooku's solar sailer, and could help generate additional speed when necessary. It was believed that only six Ginivex-class fighters were produced, all to fulfill and order to Dooku himself. Two were eventually captured by the Jedi Knights, and the remaining four vanished with Asajj Ventress.
Rishii
this species of small, flying creatures was native to the mountainous regions of the planet Rishi.
Bunker Buster
this was the term used to describe the exploding rockets produced during the Clone Wars, and used to smash bunkers and buried command posts during a siege.
Thermal Bomb
this was a form of explosive developed by the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the height of the Clone Wars. Rather than exploding and spraying an area with shrapnel or other material, a thermal bomb detonated into a ball of incredible heat, burning everything within its blast radius into a charred husk.
Skin-glove
developed for medical use during the years leading up to the Clone Wars, this special material could be applied to a doctor's hands in order to protect them from infection. Because it was a free-flowing material, skin-glove could be used to protect the hands of virtually any race.
Shockwave
this spherical concussion missile was produced just before the Clone Wars. It was noted for the way in which the concussion field expanded in a sphere, allowing a ship gunner to fire it the midst of several attackers and have the effects of the blast hit multiple targets.
Republic Armed Forces
this was the generic term used to describe the collection of military forces mustered by the Old Republic for participation in the Clone Wars. Included in the Republic Armed Forces was the Grand Army of the Republic and the Jedi Knights.
Republic Mobile Surgical Unit
this was the name given to the field hospitals that were established by the Grand Army of the Republic, during the Clone Wars. Each RMSU - Rimsoo, for short - was staffed by military officers, surgeons, medics, nurses, and their supporting personnel, creating a complete hospital location that could be moved close to a battlefront. The primary mission of each RMSU was to patch up the Republic's casualties of battle, in an effort to keep attrition to a minimum in the face of the massive and easy-to-replace troops of battle droids that fought for the Confederacy of Independent Systems. As the name suggested, each RMSU could be packed up and ready to move within an hour's notice, in case the tide of the battle indicated the unit's current position might be overrun.
JR-8
this was a series of janitorial maintenance droids produced by PublicTechnic during the years following the Clone Wars. It was equipped with a canister of cleaning fluid and an spray nozzle, as well as scrubbers and a light manipulator arm. The JR-8 was known as a feisty droid that worked diligently at its assigned tasks, and often squirted its cleaning fluid at any being that impeded its ability to complete them. The JR-8 moved about on four stubby legs.
