A Speculative Look at Potentially Interesting Crossover Battles
Darth Vader vs. Dr. Doom

Rules for our Versus Competitions: 1) Only primary sources allowed. Secondary sources, like novelizations and role-playing supplements, tend to be unauthorized and inconsistent. 2) The fight occurs on neutral ground with each combatting party having no time to prepare, unless otherwise specified. 3) The battle is JUST fun speculation, not a critique of the quality of the characters. We're just speculating about who SHOULD win, objectively speaking, in a fair fight.

MIKE: It's been suggested that the character of Darth Vader was modeled in part after the character of Dr. Doom. So what if these two were to duke it out? Darth Vader has his very powerful Force abilities, Light Saber skills, and superhuman strength due to his cybernetics. Dr. Doom has his armor, with its sensors, energy weapons, flight, and strength augmenting capabilities. He also has his vast array of technological devices, and superior intellect.
The victor of such a conflict would be contingent upon several factors. If the parameters of this fight were such that the two were simply thrown together spontaneously with no warning or preparation on either of their parts (and assuming both of them are carrying the weapons and/ or devices either of them would always have with them normally), I'd have to say the fight would go to Darth Vader. He could use the Force to deflect Doom's energy attacks, or crush him to death inside his own armor, or make his heart stop, or choke him, or any multitude of things his powers would allow. Doom's flight advantage wouldn't help him either, obviously for the same reasons. Doom's only chance in such a confrontation would be to somehow outsmart Vader before he could employ any of these Force attacks since Doom is clearly much more intelligent at least.
On the other hand, if the parameters of the bout were such that each of them were given plenty of advance warning and preparation time before having to actually fight one another, (and assuming the fight had to be just between the two of them... no fair sending a fleet of Star Destroyers to lay waste to Latvaria), then I think the fight would go to Dr. Doom. He could conceivably study the way the Force works and figure out a way to negate it (he's managed far more seemingly difficult feats of scientific mastery in the past). He would be able to employ many of the devices already available to him as well... he could use his time machine to go back in time to prevent Anakin Skywalker from ever being born. He could steal or recreate the cosmic power of Silver Surfer like he has in the past. He could augment his own armor in innumerable ways... there's almost no limit to what Doom could do technologically in preparation for such a fight. Darth Vader's only hope would be in his clairvoyance. He could, at least potentially, have an idea of what he was going to be up against. But even given Vader's incredibly powerful mastery of the Force and the Lightsaber, Doom's brilliance would overwhelm him given these conditions.
So in summary, I'd have to say this would be hard one to call. Like I said though, if given the time to prepare, Dr. Doom would beat Darth Vader. If not, and the two just had to duke it out with no warning or preparation, then Darth Vader would be the clear victor.

PAUL: What makes this match so interesting is that both combatants wield both mystical and technological powers. Both men are obviously well-armed, but Darth Vader is a master of the dark side of Force just as Doctor Doom is proficient in the occult (something many people might not take into consideration). This exciting battle would feature heavy firepower, sharp cunning, trickery, and fantastic dialogue.
In a spontaneous confrontation, Darth Vader clearly has the upper hand, just as Mike argued. Doom tends to be overconfident whereas Vader is very collected. Vader also has extra-sensory abilities that let him gain the initiative over Doom. Even if Doom got the jump on him, Darth Vader has the calm quickness it takes to eliminate Doom's advantage. I would like to see Vader try to dominate Doom's will, however. That would clearly be futile. I can also imagine Doom firing off some gauntlet blasts as Vader easily deflects them (like we saw him do to Han Solo's blaster shots at Cloud City in Empire Strikes Back).
I think a spontaneous battle between the two would come down to how powerful Doom's defense is, because if he can survive an initial onslaught and flee, then Doom can be prepared for the next time they meet. Doom does have a force field (check out Marvel Universe #3), and his propulsion jets make him more mobile than the Sith Lord. If worse came to worse, Doom has also pulled off a stunt where he transfers his consciousness into someone else's body nearby, switching his mind with theirs so that they're stuck in his body. I can see Vader deflecting Doom's gauntlet blasts, grounding Doom with his telekinesis (by pinning him or throwing objects at him), slicing through Doom's force field with his light saber, then getting Doom caught in one of his famous choke-holds. As the metal in Doom's armor slowly crushes inward, Doom looks over at a nearby Stormtrooper--transfers minds--and then some poor trooper gets killed in Doom's body! Doom would have to play it cool so that Vader wouldn't detect him (maybe Vader won't bother looking since he assumes Doom's already dead). Then Doom goes off to fight another day.
When Doom gets a chance to prepare to battle Darth Vader, then it's just as Mike said: no contest. Doom has incredible technology at his disposal at that point, including the ability to time travel. Of course, if Doom is allowed to prepare, then maybe Vader should too, but that would include using Imperial forces, which is quite separate from this man-to-man battle. Nonetheless, I give the edge to Dr. Doom for sure. He's just got the know-how and the greater will. Vader may have good will power, but hey, the guy kneels before the Emperor while Doom faces Silver Surfer and Galactus without fear. And of course, we all know Vader turned out to be a softee in Return of the Jedi
.
So I think that Doom has a real chance to survive a spontaneous duel, and a likely chance to defeat Darth Vader with preparation. If Doom couldn't survive that first battle, though, Vader's got him.
