Lucas Unveils New Digital Arts Center

George Lucas and nearly 2,000 guests today celebrated the unveiling of the Letterman Digital Arts Center, a 23-acre, 860,000-square-foot production campus in the heart of city's historic Presidio.
Official Press Release:
The Letterman Digital Arts Center is devoted to the production of digital cinema and videogames and the creative exploration and innovation of new digital tools that allow artists to bring anything they can imagine to life. "The digital revolution began in San Francisco, and digital arts and entertainment have only begun to show their potential," Lucas said during the opening gala, which saw guests treated to entertainment by San Francisco artists Boz Scaggs, Chris Isaak, Bonnie Raitt, Michael Tilson Thomas and the cast of Beach Blanket Babylon, among others.
Lucasfilm Ltd. is relocating Industrial Light & Magic -- the leading visual effects house in the world -- and LucasArts, the producer of some of the year's top-selling game titles, to the Letterman Digital Arts Center. "Exploring the digital world together makes them even stronger," said Lucasfilm President and Chief Operating Officer Micheline Chau, noting that the Letterman Digital Arts Center boasts the largest computer network in the entertainment industry.
Within the Letterman Digital Arts Center is a massive data center housing a Render farm, file servers and storage systems, allowing computers to process data 24 hours a day, seven days a week to create astounding visual images for movies and games.
The computer network at the Letterman Digital Arts Center delivers a capability similar to working on a live movie set -- only "virtually." Distance boundaries have been eliminated, and digital artists can collaborate internally throughout the campus, as well as with movie and game creators anywhere in the world.
Different audiences will experience the benefits of the Letterman Digital Arts Center in different ways. Motion-picture directors will enjoy greater real-time collaboration on visual-effects shots. Movie audiences, in turn, will be treated to higher-quality visual effects.
The Letterman Digital Center also includes a 298-seat, state-of-the-art, THX-certified screening room equipped for digital projection; two 65-seat theaters for viewing dailies; a 15,000-square-foot daycare center for the children of employees; and a 300-seat employee dining commons, boasting views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Palace of Fine Arts and downtown San Francisco's Transamerica Pyramid -- from a single vantage point.
Seventeen of the Letterman Digital Art Center's 23 acres are public park space, designed by renowned landscape artist Lawrence Halprin. The Center's 1,500 parking spaces are underground, preserving the integrity of the park space. The Perk Presidio cafe is also on site and is open to the public.
The grounds of the Letterman Digital Arts Center open to the public at 10:30 a.m. on June 29.
